That is why prevention depends on working alarms, correctly maintained fuel-burning equipment, safe habits, and a response plan everyone can follow.

This guide turns those pieces into a practical room-by-room check. It is useful for homeowners, renters, caregivers, and community educators. It does not replace local building or fire codes, a qualified technician, or emergency instructions.

Understand where carbon monoxide can come from

Carbon monoxide, often shortened to CO, is produced when fuel burns. Possible household sources include furnaces, boilers, water heaters, fireplaces, gas ranges, portable generators, charcoal grills, vehicles, and small engines.

The CDC’s carbon monoxide prevention guidance explains that CO can build up indoors and harm people and animals who breathe it. A smoke alarm and a CO alarm detect different dangers, so one should not be assumed to replace the other.

Begin by listing every fuel-burning appliance and every place a vehicle, generator, grill, heater, or engine may be used near the home. Include garages, basements, cabins, workshops, porches, and temporary equipment used during power outages.

Check sleeping areas first

Test and maintain each alarm on the manufacturer’s schedule. Replace batteries and the entire unit when directed. The CDC advises replacing a detector according to the manufacturer’s instructions and notes that models have a limited working life.

Do not silence an unfamiliar signal and go back to sleep. If you cannot identify the sound quickly, move to a safe location and contact the manufacturer, property manager, fire department, or emergency services as the situation requires.

Review the kitchen without using it as a heater

Chimneys should also be checked or cleaned regularly because blockages can contribute to indoor buildup.

Keep vents and exhaust paths clear. Do not cover a vent to stop a draft or place belongings against equipment. After renovations, storms, pest activity, or roof work, check whether vents or chimneys were blocked or changed.

Renters can ask the property owner or manager who is responsible for alarms, batteries, inspections, and appliance service. Put maintenance requests in writing and keep a copy. Local housing or fire officials can explain requirements that apply in the community.

Keep generators far outside

A portable generator should never run inside a home, basement, shed, crawlspace, or garage—even with doors and windows open. Use a battery-powered or battery-backup CO alarm in the home while a generator is operating.

Plan generator placement before an outage. Mark a suitable outdoor location, review extension-cord and electrical instructions, and decide who is trained to operate the equipment. If no safe location is available, do not improvise.

Never use charcoal grills, camp stoves, or flameless chemical heaters indoors. A covered porch, tent, or partly enclosed space may still trap exhaust.

Check garage and vehicle habits

Never run a vehicle in an attached garage, even when the garage door is open. Move the vehicle outdoors before warming it, clearing snow, charging the battery through engine use, or troubleshooting.

Keep the door between the garage and home closed, and do not treat it as a substitute for safe vehicle operation. Have vehicle exhaust systems checked when there is damage, an unusual sound, or suspected leakage. Create a clear alarm-response plan

Every household member should know that a CO alarm is not a “wait and see” signal. When it sounds:

  1. Move everyone, including pets, to fresh air outdoors.
  2. Call 911 or the appropriate local emergency service from outside.
  3. Tell responders that a carbon monoxide alarm sounded or exposure is suspected.
  4. Do not re-enter until emergency personnel say it is safe.
  5. Have the source evaluated and corrected before equipment is used again.
